Your training is presented through a series of short video lessons that outline the best strategies to help your child learn quickly, retain what is taught and build upon previous victories. Highly effective curriculum
The full program is divided into 3 levels. Each level contains small groups of letter sounds. Every level introduces new concepts that will leverage your effectiveness as a teacher and create an environment where your child is glowing with excitement and ready to learn! Each skillset in teaching and learning builds on previously mastered skills. No assumptions are ever made. Everyone involved is always on the same page. The letter sounds are presented in a carefully chosen order based on solid scientific research that in turn, yield the greatest amount of words that can be read in the shortest amount of time. Together we are building rock solid confidence, as your child begins to read from the very first lesson! You can teach it, they will learn it! That reality will be a constant in your home. This programs also includes all 220 high-frequency words from the internationally accepted DOLCH list and has been carefully woven through all three levels. This reduces the need to memorize over 139 out of the 220 site words. No other program out there is this efficient and committed to reducing the risk of failure due to poor memory skills. Best of all? The Course is flexible. No one will ever pressure you to complete lessons by a given date. You go as fast as you can and as slow as you need. Even at a the humble pace of the slow and steady tortoise, these methods pack a punch! Yes. Did you teach your child how to tie their shoe laces, wash their hands or ride a bicycle? You have been teaching your child since the day they came into your life. What pre-qualifies you to teach them how to read? You are more invested in your child’s success than anyone else. That commitment and drive is rarely seen in overworked and underpaid teachers who struggle to give each child the equal and undivided attention they deserve. Knowing HOW to teach reading and WHAT to teach is a skill that is easily acquired through the Treehouse Phonics course.
In a nutshell? FAST results! In the last twenty years, I have tried just about every nationally recognized program I could get access to. Popular programs like Jolly Phonics, Letters and Sounds and a host of others. Many of these programs are designed to train teachers in their traditional teaching roles. Many of them are outrageously expensive and promote costly add-ons that seem to be more interested in your wallet. I was greatly alarmed to discover that many of these programs continue to hold on to gimmicks and tricks that have long been proven to be inaccurate. I’ve sifted through it all, kept what worked and discarded the rest. Best of all, I’ve painstakingly tailored this program to train and empower parents to take control of their child’s education and teach them how to read with the most effective methods and techniques available today.
In a traditional schooling environment, the subject matter you are about to present to your child is generally spread out over two or three years. Wow! Too long. Depending on your child’s abilities and the frequency of each lesson, I have seen this material successfully absorbed within six months. One of the biggest concerns for homeschooling parents is that their child might fall behind. Now imagine being a year and a half AHEAD of the pack?
Each lesson can take as little as ten minutes depending on the complexity of the subject, how fast your child assimilates the material and whether you chose to enhance the lessons with games, crafts or other supplemental materials available to you free of charge.
The videos are designed to save time. No one wants to thumb through a 400-page handbook before each lesson. The videos are short and to the point. While much of the Parent / Child workbook speaks for itself, you are never left guessing. With that said, a video may be as short as 1 minute or as long as five minutes. The key was to keep things bite-sized and have you up and ready to teach with enthusiasm and skill.
I have used these methods on children as young as 2 1/2 years old. Does that set a precedent or a new benchmark? No. This becomes a sensitive subject for many parents. Is your neighbour bragging their child can read at 3 years old? Ignore them! Basically, your child is ready when they can hear sounds in words. It can be as simple as holding up an apple and helping them to recognize the initial short vowel a sound. Work through the alphabet with items around home. “b-b-ball”. Are they hearing the b or any other sounds in a word. We call this phonemic awareness. If they show any proof of this at any age, they are ready to begin.
Absolutely! Have I mapped out each lesson against Common Core or Early Years Foundation stages. No. Standards change and evolve over time. Our prime goal is to help your child become a lifelong reader; to read with fluency; to understand and comprehend what they are reading; to LOVE reading. If you could teach your child to read fluently at 5 years old, standards will only serve as a benchmark, proving your child has risen above expectations!
